A walk among tombstones by Lawrence Block is an exceptional mystery book that I truly enjoyed. It is part of the Matt Scudder series from the author. The subject, the characters, and the writing style are simply amazing! The characters are really interesting and I dare to say they are quite different from other characters from similar books.
Usually, when you read about a detective, he is perfect, detectives in books are created to look perfect and flawless. However, Matt Scudder is different, as he is an ex-alcoholic and he still continues attending AA meetings to keep away from alcohol.
Elaine, Matt’s girlfriend is a prostitute, but she isn’t working on the streets but at her home. However, Matt doesn’t seem against her job, as their relationship isn’t one that they think could get to marriage.
When the wife of a heroin kingpin’s is kidnapped, Matt is called to help in finding the kidnappers. Francine, Kenan Khoury’s wife has been kidnapped and the kidnappers contacted Kenan and asked him for a million dollars to get his wife back. He asks for Peter, his brother’s help. After they negotiate with the kidnappers, Kenan gets his wife back… into pieces.
So Matt is called to help Kenan find the kidnappers, but no one seems to have too much information on them. All he knows is that the phone calls were from various public phone boots.
A walk among the tombstones – a great mystery book
Matt asks for help from various people, including TJ, a young boy who lives on the streets. TJ proves to be a real help, as he has plenty of acquaintances who can help Matt with his investigation.
During his investigation, Matt discovers various other tracks that lead him to think he has to do with serial killers. He even finds some similar cases and, with Elaine’s help, he succeeds in talking to a victim who managed to escape from the kidnappers.
Slowly, Matt seems to be on the right path to finding the kidnappers. He gets help from Elaine, TJ, Peter, Kenan, and others to find out the bad guys in this story. However, everything changes when the kidnappers strike again. You’ll need to read this book to find out who they kidnap this time and how the story ends.
A walk among tombstones is a great mystery book. I loved the way the story is created and I also loved the characters. I especially liked the detective, as he isn’t built following a perfection pattern, but he is a nice character who isn’t ashamed of getting help from people coming from different social environments. He collaborates with drug dealers, drug addicts, kids who live on the streets and even with hackers.
The book is written from Matt’s point of view as if he would tell the reader the story. There are some very tough scenes in the book, but they are excellent like that, as they give a fascinating shape to the story.
So, if you want to read a book filled with adrenaline and that will keep you busy for a few hours, you should read A walk among tombstones.
