If you wish to read a thriller that makes you scared, then you need to read “Into the darkest corner” by Elizabeth Haynes. This book is tough, but this toughness is perfect for thriller books. I can’t even tell you how much I loved this book! At some point, I was so captivated by the story, that I started looking for information that the book might be based on a real story.
The subject of this book is an abusive relationship. We know that there are so many such relationships in real life, as well! I’m sure you also know at least someone who’s in such a relationship. Maybe you even asked yourself “Why does she live with him, since he abuses her?”. Well, you won’t find the answer to this question by reading this book, but it will surely make you think about this subject.
Into the darkest corner is a story that develops in front of the reader on two plans: the present and the past. Catherine is the main character and she appears in both plans. She has been an orphan from an early age and ever since then, her life started to mean having fun with friends in the club, drinking alcohol, and having sex with unknown persons. This, however, until she meets Lee, who is a bodyguard at one of her favorite clubs that she attends with her friends, Sylvia, Claire, and Louise.
Love story… or not
Catherine and Lee start a relationship, one of those that everyone else envies. Her friends are a bit jealous of Catherine’s luck in finding, apparently, the perfect man: good-looking, friendly, tender, romantic, loving… and the list goes on. Even Catherine is happy in the beginning. However, after a time, she starts meeting the real face of her lover. Lee is a policeman, but he is extremely possessive in his relationship and a very tough guy.
Slowly, Catherine isn’t allowed to go out with her friends, to dress up as she wants or to get home later without telling Lee where she is. She even finds out that Lee is stalking her, he seems to know about every step she makes.
Catherine doesn’t want to have her life so controlled, so when Lee becomes violent, she decides to break up with him. She even succeeds to leave him, but her friends intervene and accuse her of inadequate behavior.
As she misses Lee, she ends getting back with him again. Things aren’t getting better, though, as he starts being more and more brutal with Catherine. Although she tries to tell her friends about how Lee is and what she’s going through with him, they don’t trust her, but rather think that Catherine hurts herself.
The end of the love story
When she is full of her boyfriend’s behavior, Catherine decides to escape from this abusive relationship. She gets a well-done plan, and he doesn’t seem to suspect anything. Catherine is happy thinking she might start a new life, far away from Lee and his abuses.
However, everything turns out worse than she could have ever imagined, with Lee almost killing Catherine. She manages to escape, though, and he gets imprisoned for three years. During this time, Catherine moves in another city and starts a new life, with the name of Cathy.
Into the darkest corner is the memory
After all the abuses she’s been through during her relationship with Lee, Cathy became a person who suffers from Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Therefore, in her new home, she can’t stop checking on her windows, curtains, door locks, and she even knows the exact place of every single item in her home. She counts the steps, she keeps changing her route home every day and so on. She is afraid of certain things that remind her of the past and she avoids people as much as possible.
One day, she needs to face the real world, when Stuart, a psychologist, moves in the apartment on top of hers. Cathy starts talking to Stuart and they even become friends. Stuart insists on her treating her disorder, so she gets rid of her fears. With his help, Cathy gets better. However, her peace is once again ruined, when the police announce her that Lee is going to be soon released from prison.
Will Lee come after Cathy or is she safe? There is something in her soul telling her she didn’t get rid of Lee, and all the progress she done in the last time is ruined after she hears this news. You will only discover what happens next by reading the book “Into the darkest corner”, which I really recommend you!
